Summer Woodland Paintings – Capturing Light, Colour and Atmosphere in the Oxfordshire Countryside

My latest collection of original acrylic paintings—Sunny Path, Spring Greens and Sundown Ferns—celebrates the richness of the British woodland in summer.

Inspired by walks near my studio in the beech woodlands of Woodcote and Checkendon, South Oxfordshire, they aim to capture the winding paths, dappled sunlight, towering beech trees and lush summer ferns.

Walking at different times of day brings different light conditions and atmosphere, but always a feeling of calm and a beauty to enjoy.

Why I chose a limited colour palette

Although my paintings are known for their vibrant colour combinations, this collection explores the use of a more restrained palette. The different greens, warm earth tones and touches of golden light work together to bring a feeling of calm to the works.  The light becomes the focal point.

Working in green of course also reflects the woodland in summer. Unlike spring, where new leaves have bright and fresh hues, summer woodland has established, sumptuous greens. You can mix a huge variety of shades from a few colours – blues, red, yellow, white and black, which also helps to harmonise the paintings.

A looser approach

One unexpected influence on this collection was the weather itself.

The exceptionally hot summer has meant that my acrylic paints dry far more quickly than usual. Instead of being able to spend time thinking about each brushstroke, I had to work instinctively, making confident marks before the paint dried.

At first this felt like a challenge, but I really began to enjoy it. I think the result is a series of lively paintings full of energy and atmosphere.  I will continue to work more in this way.

More Than a Landscape

Even though I paint recognisable landscapes, I aim to represent the world in a different, imaginative way and to transport the viewer into the scene. I hope they remind you of a favourite place, or feeling of calm whilst being in nature.
