I discovered a lost treasure yesterday. My first ever pastel painting. I remember the day I discovered pastels – at an Art Event at Basildon Park, a National Trust property in Berkshire. We took my Mother-in-Law there for her Birthday to encourage her to get painting again. One of the organisers asked me what medium I’d like to use and I said “They look interesting – what are those?” and she replied “soft pastels.” So I gave them a go. I sat in an upstairs window and looked out at the East Wing (or whichever bit of the gorgeous building it was!) and I started to draw, not knowing what do with the ‘chalks.’ People were wandering round the house and looking over my shoulder. Someone quipped “you’ve done that before.” Of course I hadn’t but now, having done scores of pastel paintings, I feel a little bit qualified to be able to answer “actually, I have and I intend to do a lot more!” So, that day was the start of a passion for me – to get to know the pastels better and create art. My lovely Mother-in-Law did not revive her pleasure for painting on that day, but I hope that now she has retired, she could take it up once again.
